What Does Upgraded Mean?

Upgrading your home's smoke alarms will increase your family's protection should there be a fire in your home. Interconnected alarms and alarms in bedrooms ensure everyone is alerted to a fire, even if they are asleep in bedrooms with doors closed, giving you and your family more time to escape safely.
Upgraded means that your home meets the latest requirements of the Fire and Emergency Services (Domestic Smoke Alarms) Amendment Bill 2016. According to the new law, by 2027 smoke alarms in all dwellings must:
  • Be Photoelectric (AS 3786-2014);
  • Be interconnected, so if one goes off they all go off;
  • Be not older than ten years;
  • Be installed in each bedroom;
  • Be installed in hallways outside of the bedrooms and if there is none, in the most likely path of escape.

Why are my smoke alarms beeping?

Not all smoke alarms are made equal.
Higher quality alarms are less likely to raise a false alarm, as they are built with superior components and cope better with the humid Queensland environment than other cheaper smoke alarms. We only choose the best alarms, because we don’t think anything else is worth the risk. You can feel comfortable too knowing that our Cavius alarms have a 10 year warranty — just for that extra peace of mind.

Do I need to upgrade my smoke alarms?

Upgrading your smoke alarms will increase you and your family's protection should there be a fire in your home. Interconnected alarms and alarms in the bedrooms ensure everyone is alerted to a fire, even if they are asleep in bedrooms with doors closed, giving you and your family more time to escape safely. Owner-occupied properties must be upgraded by January 1st 2027.
