Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation:
What You Need to Know and Why It Matters

Since 1 January 2022, any residential property being rented must have upgraded smoke alarms to ensure the highest level of protection for both tenants and property investments.
To comply, your home must have:
- Photoelectric alarms (AS 3786:2014)
- Interconnected alarms — if one sounds, they all sound
- Alarms installed in the correct locations
- Hard-wired or wireless alarms powered by a non-removable 10-year lithium battery, or a combination of both.
- Note: Existing 240V smoke alarms must be replaced like-for-like (with hard-wired alarms).
- Alarms installed: on each storey, in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the property, or in the most likely path of escape if no hallway exists
We take care of all of this during your upgrade — so you’re fully compliant, protected, and future-ready.
