Smoke Alarm Troubleshooting Guide

IMPORTANT

This generic advice can be followed to hush any brand of alarm. However, specific brand instructions MUST be followed to DEACTIVATE a smoke alarm to avoid damaging the alarm. Instructions to DEACTIVATE a Cavius, Clipsal, Emerald, PSA, Matelec, Voltex, Red, Quell, Brooks, Le Grand or Siterwell smoke alarm can be found below by clicking on your alarm brand.

VIEW ALARM INSTRUCTIONS

Step One: Check for fire

Check there is NO fire in the house. If so, leave immediately and call 000.

Step Two: No fire? Now find the triggering alarm

Look for the alarm with a red flashing light. All the alarms will be sounding as they are interconnected by only this alarm will have a red flashing light. TIP: Look directly under the alarm as sometimes the red light can be difficult to see.

Step Two: No fire? Now find the triggering alarm

ONCE SILENCED THE ALARMS WILL ENTER A DORMANT PERIOD FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES FOLLOW STEP 4 IMMEDIATELY WHILST THE ALARMS ARE DORMANT

Step Four: Vaccum all alarms

In most cases the cause of the false alarm is environmental. Vacuum all around each smoke alarm, 360 degrees over the mesh guard. Pay particular attention to the triggering alarm. This will clear the alarm of any insects, dust and other contaminants that may be triggering the alarm.

Step Five: After 10 minutes the smoke alarms will resume normal operation

If the smoke alarm does not sound again, you have removed the contaminant and no further action is needed. But if the smoke alarm sounds again despire being thoroughly vacuumed, it may be faulty. Move to step 6.

Step Six: Identify alarm

You must follow the deactivation instructions for the correct type of alarm as well as the correct brand of alarm. Find your smoke alarm brand below and identify whether the triggering alarm is a 240v or wireless 10-year lithium. A 240v alarm will have a green light indicating it is connected to the mains power.

Step Seven: Deactivate the triggering alarm

ONLY THE TRIGGERING ALARM (FLASHING RED LIGHT) NEEDS TO BE DEACTIVATED. This alarm is triggering the other alarms as they are all interconnected. Follow the instructions below to deactive the alarm.

Step Eight: Let us know

Once you have successfully de-activated a smoke alarm OR if an alarm persists in sounding despite following these instructions, please contact Coast Smoke Alarms 1300 722 552 to report the fault. Please note any calls outside of office hours will be returned as soon as possible the following working day.
